Marshall Studio Series JTM ST20H 20-Watt Tube Guitar Amplifier Head
The Marshall Studio Series JTM ST20H Tube Amp Head is a powerful new member in Marshall Amps’ esteemed Studio amplifier range. Reimagining the first Marshall heads ever created – even before the rock cornerstone 1959 SLP – the Studio JTM, available in head, cabinet, and combo configurations, represents a modern interpretation of a classic amplifier.
Jim Marshall’s history in making amplifiers began with the JTM amplifier, a valve-powered guitar head styled after early American tweed combos that were being turned up for the first time; a groundbreaking sound that many Brits also wanted to get their hands on. Quite obviously the rest is history, with this new amplifier paving the way for the Marshall sound.
Through the Studio series of amps, Marshall has finally satisfied the request long asked for by many players – and sound engineers: make a vintage Marshall smaller, lighter, and quieter while still retaining the sonic DNA of its larger siblings. This successful line of UK-made tube heads and combos is now furthered with the JTM circuit now available in the Studio series.
The Studio Series JTM 20-watt head shares the same front panel controls as the original JTM, with two independent channels – High Treble and Normal – sharing a master presence control and three-band EQ. Each channel employs a low and high input, both channels can be used simultaneously just as a vintage Marshall would have been. Simply run a patch lead out of one channel’s input into the other channel or run a Y-cable. The Studio series JTM also features the original Marshall “coffin” logo and is dressed in a sleek black tolex and fawn grill covering, just as the vintage JTM amplifier was.
The JTM receives the Studio Series treatment by way of a low power/high power option disguised in the amp’s standby switch, allowing the player to select between a full 20-watt output or a scaled down five watts. On the back panel are a 4-, 8-, and 16-Ohm speaker outputs, a 1/4” DI out, effects loop on/off selector switch, and effects loop send and return – all features unique to the Studio Series.
In the US we call them “Tubes” and in the UK they’re “Valves”. (The “tube” is the subway in England.) Potato, pot-ah-to, this amp is all-tube driven with the same complement as the vintage JTM – two 5881s in the power section, two 12AX7s (UK calls them ECC83) in the preamp, and a single 12AX7 phase splitter.
The Studio Series JTM amplifier is here, putting the sound of the 1960s and the dawn of rock and roll and the hands of today’s players all around the world.
