Fender Custom Shop ’50s Double Esquire, Heavy Relic, Aged Black
This Fender Custom Shop ’50s Double Esquire is a representation of the Fender Esquire’s lineage, that can be traced back to 1950 and holds a pivotal place in the history of the electric guitar. Initially conceived as a single-pickup model, it quickly evolved into what became known as a Broadcaster, later renamed the Telecaster. This ’50s Double Esquire, meticulous designed by the Fender Custom Shop, is a faithful recreation of this iconic instrument, allowing guitarists to experience the essence of Fender’s groundbreaking designs from the mid-20th century, with some modern sophistication.
Cut from off-center 2-piece ash, with the seam a little to the treble side of the body, the wood that creates this guitar’s silhouette is selected for its light weight, and reflects the vintage aesthetics and tonal characteristics of its era. Its ’51 Nocaster body shape offers a timeless body shape, and is attached to its neck with a sturdy 4-bolt connection.
The neck of the ’50s Double Esquire is cut in a rift-sawn style from maple, and boasts a classic ’50 Blackguard Tele profile, offering players the opportunity to experience the neck feel of a vintage Fender, as described by FCS. The fingerboard, also maple, features a compound radius from 7.25″ to 9.50″, and is divided by 21 Medium Jumbo frets. Between each, Micarta Black inlays (.250″) are wide spaces, and the neck also features Micarta Black side dots.
Under the hood of the ’50s Double Esquire, hide two hand-wound ’50-’51 FCS Blackguard pickups, designed to faithfully replicate the iconic twang and grit of vintage Telecasters. True to the original Blackguard Telecaster sound, these pickups deliver punchy lows, rich mids, and vibrant, twangy highs, and feature alnico 3 magnets in the bridge and alnico 5 in the neck, wound by hand with 43-gauge Enamel wire for genuine vintage performance and sonic authenticity .Controlled by a classic ’51 Mod Nocaster relic’d setup, the ’50s Double Esquire features three-way switching, allowing the pickups to be navigated with ease.
Fender Custom Shop’s Heavy Relic treatment sets this gorgeous instrument apart visually. This finish is engineered to emulate a guitar that’s been gigged with heavily since its birth in the ’50s. This one specifically features forearm wear on the top of the lower bout, as well as heavy hand wear on the neck, wear on the pickguard, and buckle rash and heavy fretboard wear. There are multiple areas that expose the ash wood below the finish, and dings and dents found throughout the entire neck and body, with all the hardware relic’d to match the appearance of the wood. The neck is also essentially worn to wood, and features a medium tint nitro that adds a touch of vintage warmth to the overall aesthetic.Â
