Fender Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster, Rosewood Fingerboard, Coma Red Electric Guitar
At only 16-years-old, Michael Landau walked into a guitar shop in Los Angeles and walked out with what would be one of the most played and recorded electric guitars in history. He might not have known at the time, but that ’59 Strat would be his trusted tone companion, and continues to inspire countless other players. Now, thanks to team at Fender, we too, can know what it’s like to play such a special instrument.
As part of their Stories Collection, the Fender Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster has been born. It’s based on the 1959 Stratocaster that Landau purchased as a teenager that he named “Coma” and has been on recordings with artists such as Miles Davis, Rod Stewart, Bonnie Raitt, Pink Floyd, and so many more. “Coma” was heavily by the time it fell in to Michael’s hands, so he took plenty of liberties over the years with continuously tweaking its parts to meet his needs. The Fender Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster is based on how his guitar stands today.
Its ’59 alder body is draped in a soft, satin Nitrocellulose “Coma Red” finish. Atop the maple neck with a custom “C” profile lies a fine specimen of a slab rosewood fingerboard with a 7.25″ radius. Twenty-one narrow/tall frets pay homage to the vintage-guitar-building days, and are highlighted by white pearloid dot inlays. A synchronized tremolo with a cold-rolled stell block lives over an “old” Floyd Rose route in the body. In keeping with Landau’s current electronics, this Strat feartures a Custom CuNiFe wide-range humbucker in the bridge position, and two Custom Ultra Noiseless Strat pickups for the middle and neck. It uses a traditional 5-way blade to switch and blend his favorite Stratocaster tones, and keeps its guts hidden with a 4-ply tortoiseshell pickguard and black Strat-style skirt knobs. A serialized 4-bolt neck plate sports Custom Coma artwork, and last but not least, the guitar’s case is as luxurious in design as one can be. The Fender Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster is fully equipped with functionality, style, and mojo to be your next workhorse, just as it remains to be for the legend himself.
